An Open Letter to the Balloon Boy Sheriff Jim Alderden

Dear Sheriff Jim Alderden,

It appears your going to file criminal charges against the Mr. and Mrs. Heene, the folks who apparently perpetrated the balloon boy hoax.  I would encourage you to seriously consider not filing those charges for a few reasons as follows.

  • You will financially ruin a family of 5 people over a serious civil disturbance.  This is not a criminal action that they perpetrated, it is a serious breach of public trust and should be addressed as such.
  • You will separate those children from their parents should they be found guilty of the charges filed against them.  Those children would then be at the mercy of a woefully unmerciful state child protective (sic) system and/or uncaring foster families.
  • They will lose their home.
  • They will lose their vehicles (if still on loan status)
  • They will lose the ability to work in jobs that require bonding (he is a contractor) or other workplace regulated licensing.
  • You will place the financial burden for their incarceration on the state and also for the provisioning of those children.
  • They won't be paying taxes while in jail.

I recommend you consider the following alternative remedies by order of a lawful court:

  1. They must pay for the state and federal helicopter time.
  2. They must pay for the time you and your deputies and other law enforcement personnel were involved in the fiasco.
  3. They must pay for the emergency closure time of the airports forced to shutdown.
  4. They must pay a fine for making a serious and far reaching civil disturbance.
  5. They be court ordered to not pull another stunt like this again.
  6. They be placed on probation to monitor compliance, said monitoring to be paid out of their pocket.
  7. Perhaps some civic responsibility statements on tv or radio as a public service announcement.  Or giving speeches gratis to school children.

Of course this is just a simple list off the top of my head, but I think you get my point.  Why destroy a family when civil sanctions can rectify the problem.

Do you really want to break up a family?

Sincerely,
Michael
