What is a post slug and what should I put there?

As your adding content to your entry and selecting the options you want to happen or include for the entry you come up a text entry field with the ominous words "post slug" next to it.

Click on any of the entries here at blogacause and take notice of the URL in the address field above.  The "post slug" becomes a part of the URL for the post your creating.  So that you better understand what I'm talking about, I'm going to use the following URL for my example:  http://www.blogacause.com/blogacause/blog/default/2008/11/29/blogacause-officially-opens/

The post slug in the above URL is this portion of the above URL:  blogacause-officially-opens

Some simple rules of thumb for asserting a post slug:

  • You SHOULD have a post slug for every entry.
  • You SHOULD use words for the post slug that describe your post.
  • You SHOULD add the dashes "-" between words in the "post slug".
  • You SHOULD only use the following letters and characters:  lower case letters and numbers.
